Safety Representatives the sleeping giants of safety success
Wake up and smell the coffee that the Safety Rep is bringing to your desk, together with a luscious doughnut filled with promise. Health and Safety Representatives are the beating heart of a golden or generative safety culture that was discussed in the tangerine principle blog.
When effectively trained to a decent level of competence, the safety rep can free you of the following tasks:
- Risk assessments
- Health and safety campaigns
- Hazard spotting campaigns
- Motivating safety committees
- Near hit reporting
- Meeting with the HSE and EHOs
An effective risk manager needs time to develop the principles outlined in HSG65 and the Plan, Do, Check, Act approach that you will find in a good IOSH Managing Safely course.
Safety is not a paperwork task to justify our job. It is a matter of life and death. It is the teamwork derived from working with Health and Safety Representatives that determine whether those we work with live or die.

The aim of the CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme is to ensure a basic knowledge of health and safety for all site personnel to enable them, after appropriate site induction, to work on site more safely with lower risk to themselves and others. National Course is a two day course for basic site safety and is valid for three years from the date of the course. The Renewal Course is designed as a one day refresher course for those who have already passed the CCNSG National Course. This has to be taken within three months of the Safety passport expiry date. If it is not taken within the specified time then the two day CCNSG National Course will have to be retaken.
