Course Description

NEBOSH General CertificateThis course covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
  • Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
  • Controlling Workplace Hazards (GC2)
  • Health and Safety Practical Application (GC3)

NGC 1: Management of Health and Safety

  • Element 5 – Health and safety management systems - Act

GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards

  • Element 1 – Workplace hazards and risk control
  • Element 2 – Transport hazards and risk control
  • Element 3 – Musculoskeletal hazards and control
  • Element 4 – Work Equipment Hazards and Control
  • Element 5 – Electrical safety
  • Element 6 – Fire safety
  • Element 7 - Chemical and biological health hazards and risk control
  • Element 8 - Physical and psychological health hazards and risk control

GC3: Health and Safety Practical Application

Units NGC1 and GC2 are taught units each assessed by a two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

Unit GC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate's own workplace. The assessment must normally be taken within 10 working days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by a qualified Pivotal Scotland Nebosh marker and externally moderated by NEBOSH.

When candidates have been awarded a unit certificte for all the units (ie, have achieved a pass in units NGC1, GC2 and GC3), the marks are added together and a final grade is awarded as follows:

Pass 150 – 179 marks

Credit 180 – 209 marks

Distinction 210 marks or more

You must complete all units within 5 years to achieve the full NEBOSH General Certificate qualification
