Deal with confirmation bias or your safety ship will sink

Google confirmation bias and you should recognise a common human trait of self. Denial existing in the consciousness of everyone you meet every day; the smoker who argues “my grandmother smoked 60 a day and lived to 102”; the speeding driver who is convinced slower drivers are more dangerous. It’s the underlying cause in most safety tragedies and will have abundant in; Grenfell, Bradford City, Hillsborough and Piper Alpha.

You will face confirmation bias every day as a SHEQ professional and your ability to recognise and cut through it with aggressive efficiency will be the difference between success and failure. A big sword will cut to the heart of confirmation bias. This is achieved by greater competence, knowledge, experience and training.

Confirmation bias refers to a type of selective thinking whereby one tends to notice and to look for what confirms one’s beliefs.

National Course is a two day course for basic site safety and is valid for three years from the date of the course. The Renewal Course is designed as a one day refresher course for those who have already passed the CCNSG National Course. This has to be taken within three months of the Safety passport expiry date. If it is not taken within the specified time then the two day CCNSG National Course will have to be retaken.
