Aberfan a watershed for Health and Safety in the United Kingdom
It`s ironic that such a terrible tragedy generated such an amazing revolution in health and safety in the UK.
Fifty years on and modern day health and safety professionals are still applying the letter and spirit of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. It arose from the Robens Committee following Aberfan and was described as revolutionary legislation as it moved the United Kingdom from prescriptive compliance to goal orientated duty of care.
Prior to HASAW 1974, recorded workplace fatalities averaged between 2-3 thousand per year. Since the introduction of HASAW 1974, the recorded figures have averaged under 500 per year. Tragically we lost 116 children and 28 adults as a result of this terrible accident but it gave us an amazing legacy of modern day forward thinking health and safety practice that surely has saved a huge amount of lives over the past fifty years.
Long live the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the good men and women who have enforced its ethos since formation.

The aim of the CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme is to ensure a basic knowledge of health and safety for all site personnel to enable them, after appropriate site induction, to work on site more safely with lower risk to themselves and others. National Course is a two day course for basic site safety and is valid for three years from the date of the course. The Renewal Course is designed as a one day refresher course for those who have already passed the CCNSG National Course. This has to be taken within three months of the Safety passport expiry date. If it is not taken within the specified time then the two day CCNSG National Course will have to be retaken.
