Aberfan a watershed for Health and Safety in the United Kingdom

Aberfan a watershed for Health and Safety in the United Kingdom

It`s ironic that such a terrible tragedy generated such an amazing revolution in health and safety in the UK.

aberfanclockFifty years on and modern day health and safety professionals are still applying the letter and spirit of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. It arose from the Robens Committee following Aberfan and was described as revolutionary legislation as it moved the United Kingdom from prescriptive compliance to goal orientated duty of care.

Prior to HASAW 1974, recorded workplace fatalities averaged between 2-3 thousand per year. Since the introduction of HASAW 1974, the recorded figures have averaged under 500 per year. Tragically we lost 116 children and 28 adults as a result of this terrible accident but it gave us an amazing legacy of modern day forward thinking health and safety practice that surely has saved a huge amount of lives over the past fifty years.

Long live the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the good men and women who have enforced its ethos since formation.
